Austin,Crook, Jimenez win elite titles at Grappler; Manis, Booe, Diaz win Freestyle

Three Florida wrestlers won titles in the Elite high school division at the Grappler Fall Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC on Sunday.
Andrew Austin (Charlotte), Tom Crook (Tampa Jesuit), and Matthew Jimenez (Somerset) all finished on top in the two-day event featuring some top talent from across the country.
Austin started the winning for Florida in an epic final with Kissimmee Osceola’s Cooper Haase in the 125-pound final.
The match went back-and-forth before going to sudden victory tied at 4-4.
After both wrestlers failed to score in the first overtime period, Austin secured an escape at the buzzer in the first 30-second tie-breaker before Haase equaled with a point of his own in the second. That set up the ultimate tie-breaker moment for Austin, who scored seconds into the final overtime frame to win.
Crook won another battle of Florida wrestlers as we saw a rematch from the Class 2A semifinals back in March when the Tampa Jesuit senior battled Ethan Mojena.
Mojena, now at Lake Highland Prep, battled Crook to a 4-4 tie in regulation, but with riding time being used in the event, Crook picked up the bonus point to win the 145-pound final 5-4.
And to finish the afternoon off, Jimenez finished off an undefeated weekend with a 2-1 win over Dylan Galloway in the heavyweight division.
The senior gave up just three escape points in the tournament.
Braden Basile (Tampa Jesuit), Joe Gonzalez (Winter Park), and Jonathan Ley (Lake Highland Prep) also reached the finals of the event.
Basile battled Illinois state champion Vincent Robinson to the end in the 130-pound final, nearly sending it to overtime as time expired before falling short 6-4.
Gonzalez made the most of his chances at the tournament, topping Lake Gibson state champion Brendon Abdon in the quarterfinals and Michigan state champion Darius Marines in the semifinals.
His journey fell one match short but not before taking Georgia state champion Michael Kilic to overtime in their 152-pound final.
Jonathan Ley also nearly sent his 160-pound finals match with Georgia’s Gunner Flipowicz to overtime as a late takedown attempt came up just short.
The Lake Highland Prep senior placed second after the 5-3 defeat.
In total, 26 wrestlers from Florida placed in the high school elite division at the event.
GIRLS FREESTYLE
Mary Manis made up for a finals loss on Saturday in the folkstyle division with a win at 102 pounds in freestyle.
The Lake Highland Prep freshman went undefeated in the round-robin, which included a 9-2 win over folkstyle champion Kealonie Vega (Kissimmee Osceola).
Clare Booe added to hear dominating weekend performance with a perfect Sunday to win the 108-pound division in freestyle while Dr. Phillips’ Juliana Diaz took home the top spot at 120 pounds.
Kyla Oliver (Lake Highland Prep), Cameron Galvin (Orlando Freedom), Brielle Bibla (Tocoi Creek), Jada Llamido (Hagerty), and Alyssa Favara all earned runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes.
HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY
Florida’s Josh Hartley (105), Draven McCall (112), Ryan Phillips (119), Sean-Michael Gonzalez (130), Luis Bazan (135), and Ralph Sanchez (240) all won titles.
