Tocoi Creek power to first title in school history | Monday recap

BY BRANT PARSONS — When Tocoi Creek’s wrestling team got going on Monday, they couldn’t be stopped.

The Toros came up big at the end of the 3A-1 district tournament, winning four of the five finals the Toros were in to clinch the school’s first-ever wrestling district title.

“Their momentum,” coach Darick Dunham on what propelled them to win. “They feed off of each other’s success. We have noticed it all season as they have continued to get better.”

Aiden Hubbell (120), John Antonucci (150), Nikita Chechkovsky (157), and Vladislav Chechkovsky (165) all finished atop the podium and helped lead Tocoi Creek to 236 total points and the team win.

Braylon Lawrence (2nd-285), Owen Martin (3rd-113), Finnley Uhler (3rd-132), Rex Graff (3rd-175), Alec LaVoie (4th-106), and Landon Caviness (4th-138) all qualified for next weekend’s tournament.

“This was a total team effort from top to bottom,” Dunham said. “Our guys have fun together, they all get along and they all support each other.”

“They’re a pretty tight group.”

Fletcher finished second on the day, just 20 points back, as the Senators sent seven wrestlers to the finals with Elias Twigg winning the title at 144 pounds.

In third place was Creekside, who was just 10.5 points behind Fletcher.

Luke Mims (106), Jonathan Morrison (175), Colton Leavell (190), and Cole Anderson (285) all won district titles for the Knights.

Oakleaf’s Connor Barnes (113) and Bryant Taylor (215), Bartram Trail’s Mario DiBella (126), Sandalwood’s Kyle Brown (132), and Nease’s Brady Stoutamire (138) all won individual district titles on Monday.
