Raymond Cavey is your Wrestler of the Week for Week 9

BY BRANT PARSONS — West Orange’s Raymond Cavey has had quite a senior year.

The returning state placer has picked up wins against multiple ranked wrestlers and in Week 9, he beat the then No. 1 wrestler to win the Wolfpack Invitational and was voted Kabra Wrestling’s Reader’s Choice Wrestler of the Week.

“The season has been a lot of big wins and a huge improvement from last season,” Cavey said. “The big wins mean a lot (because) it shows that the effort we put into this is starting to show, but it also shows other people are working just as hard so we have to keep going.”

Cavey moved to Florida before his junior year from Illinois.

Back in the Prairie State, Cavey started wrestling at age five when his parents “just kind of threw him into the sport.”

With the postseason next up for the senior, there’s still work to be done.

“I have to keep improving for the final state run of my high school career,” Cavey said.

The other nominations for the Reader’s Choice award were Austin Chung (Lake Gibson), Gunner Holland (Kissimmee Osceola), Jett McCauley (Charlotte), Myron Mendez (SW Miami), Erick Vargas (Lakeland), and Luke Williams (Brandon).
