11 matches to watch in Thursday’s girls district tournaments

BY BRANT PARSONS — The FHSAA girls postseason continues on Thursday with four more districts crowing 14 champions.

We’ve look at each of the districts taking place on Thursday and came up with some matches we would like to see if we were lucky enough to be at each tournament.

Check out the entire FHSAA girls postseason schedule and results here.

Of course, there is never a guarantee that these matches will take place, we don’t know coaches plans, potential injuries, or how brackets might lay out - but if these did happen, the folks in the gym would be lucky to see them.

Rankings are taken from the latest official Kabra Wrestling Individual Rankings which are released every Tuesday throughout the year.

Locations and times are taken from the FHSAA calendar and are subject to change without notice.

Girls 1A-8 at Hernando, 1 p.m.

105: #8 Savanna Valle (Hernando) vs. Gianella Walczak (Springstead)

This likely will be for the district title at 105 pounds.

120: #4 Jasmine Serrano (Springstead) vs. #5 Sydney Bridenstine (Hernando)

Serrano has three wins between the two this year - a major decision and two decision wins by 4-0 and 4-1.

Girls 1A-13 at Bayside, 4 p.m.

110: #11 Catalina Kenney (Viera) vs. #13 Caitlin Bohrer (Centennial)

Kenney has wrestled well since returning from injury and has a win by fall over Bohrer this season.

125: #12 Jayla Benjamin (Vero Beach) vs. #13 Isabel Alvarez (Viera) vs. #14 Callie Dickie (Okeechobee)

Benjamin and Alvarez both have wins over Dickie in head-to-head competition but this feels like a toss-up weight class with Cocoa Beach’s Elysse Fredenburg and Centennial’s Kylie Raczy also looking to get in the mix.

145: #6 Ciara Cortez (Sebastian River) vs. #12 Breonna Mangum (Space Coast)

Cortez has had a remarkable senior season and enters the postseason with a win over the talented Mangum.

170: #7 Lainey Driggett (Merritt Island) vs. #9 Mia Johnson (Fort Pierce Central)

Driggett was last year’s district and region champion but Johnson has come on strong this season after reaching the region blood round a year ago.

Girls 1A-14 at Wellington, 5 p.m.

100: Sara Newell (Jupiter) vs. #20 Beatriz Da Cunha (Suncoast) vs. Valeria Pineda (Dr. Joaquin Garcia)

This might be the most wide-open weight class in the district.

115: #2 Aurora Guadiana (Wellington) vs. #9 Brooke VanEtten (Jensen Beach)

When they met this season, Guadiana won by a 4-2 margin.

125: #8 Vivianna Caullett (Wellington) vs. #11 Sheyla Ochoa (Park Vista)

Caullett owns a 4-3 win over Ochoa and these two could be in the finals here.

Girls 1A-15 at South Broward, 10 a.m. (Moved to Saturday)

155: #2 Alena Rik (Mater Lakes) vs. #5 Anna-Sofia Baker (Archbishop McCarthy)

Rik has had a tremendous season and owns a pinfall victory over Baker.

190: #5 Latoya Sylvestre (South Broward) vs. #6 Day’Jah Clark (Miami Norland)

They’ve met at least three times this season with Sylvestre owning a 2-1 series advantage.
