Girls Region 1A-4: Preview and Predictions
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2025 - at South Dade
Welcome to one of my favorite traditions - the region previews.
For those that are reading one for the first time, here's a quick summary of what the region preview is.
I start first by printing out each bracket - yes, this is one of the things I'm old school on.
I notate where wrestlers are ranked in the Kabra Wrestling Rankings and then start to break it down even more.
I look for head-to-head matchups, common opponents, and how each wrestler has been trending in the stretch run.
I then question my rankings - and myself - and play out the entire bracket.
What follows is my best guess for how G1A-4 will play out.
You can print the G1A-4 region bracket here. (PDF)
I've carefully predicted the four state qualifiers in the order that I think they will finish. I've also listed wrestlers that could prove me wrong and make it to Kissimmee.
I will be wrong with these picks, and I'm okay with that. In fact, I love when kids prove me wrong (or prove me right). We even have the stickers to hand out.
These previews and predictions are meant to bring excitement to one of the most exhilarating and heartbreaking weekends in sports.
I assure you that I have no bias in my picks and truly wish the best for every wrestler competing this weekend.
And as always, these picks are for entertainment purposes only.
Now onto the preview:

Kabra's Picks
1. #3 Rosie Kleine (Monarch)
2. #12 Melissa Gallo (Florida Christian)
3. #14 Lydia Gonzalez (South Dade)
4. #21 Sara Newell (Jupiter)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #24 Alexandra Thomas (Cooper City); McKayla Noble (Westwood)
Opening round match to watch: Savanah Gonzalez (Braddock) vs. Myleshia Willis (Vero Beach)
Kabra says: Kleine enters the weekend as the favorite but watch to see what the 6th grader Gallo can do. She made her mark in the district final and her only three losses this season are to girls ranked in the Top 6.
Kabra's Picks
1. #8 Brooke VanEtten (Jensen Beach)
2. #9 Rebecca Marin (Doral Academy)
3. #11 Sheyla Figueira (Key West)
4. #14 Victoria Sifuentes (Florida Christian)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #17 Tiffany Francisco (Western); #18 Gabriela Kerber (Cypress Bay)
Opening round match to watch: Kerber vs. Figueira
Kabra says: With 8 wrestlers in the Top 21 in this bracket, nothing is a given. But VanEtten gets our pick by the slimmest of margins based on her 4-3 win over Marin this season. The top half of this bracket will not be easy sailing though with a potential ranked opponent at every step after the first round.
Kabra's Picks
1. #2 Abigail Gonzalez (Miami Southridge)
2. #8 Rebekkah Kinkade (South Dade)
3. #11 Rickkyuna Wilson (Lincoln Park)
4. #12 Camilla Delgado (Mater Academy)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #14 Melanie Loynaz (SW Miami); #16 Nevaeh Contreras (Fort Pierce Central)
Opening round match to watch: Loynaz vs. #22 Sophia DeAngeles (Park Vista)
Kabra says: Gonzalez is one of the favorites for a state title and freshman shouldn’t be challenged here. The battle for the other three spots should get interesting with seven ranked wrestlers among the competitors here.
Kabra's Picks
1. #2 Beyonce Espinosa (South Dade)
2. #14 Isabella Tellez (Doral Academy)
3. #20 Caitlin Bohrer (Centennial)
4. #23 MacKenzie Allcroft (Fort Pierce Central)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #25 Samantha Ferrer (Mater Academy); Emma Kosza (Wellington)
Opening round match to watch: Allcroft vs. Ferrer
Kabra says: Another weight class with a supremely solid favorite. Espinosa has been strong all season and should win the region title and book her first trip to Kissimmee.
Kabra's Picks
1. #1 Willow White (South Dade)
2. #3 Zoe Delgado (Florida Christian)
3. #5 Arianna Ruiz (Mater Lakes Academy)
4. #8 Carmen Moya (Miami Palmetto)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #13 Sheyla Ochoa (Park Vista); #15 Paola Blanco-Cruz (Olympic Heights)
Opening round match to watch: #16 Lana Loucks (Wellington) vs. Carley Eaton (Okeechobee)
Kabra says: White enters the weekend as our favorite here. The South Dade junior won her first two meetings against Delgado with bonus point wins, but Delgado gave her a battle at districts with White winning 5-4. Ruiz would also like to get into the finals discussion, she has a 6-2 loss to White this season.
Kabra's Picks
1. #2 Rachel Silva (Florida Christian)
2. #12 Daniela Canals (Miami Palmetto)
3. #13 Maria Halushka (Key West)
4. #16 Sydney Jones (Jensen Beach)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #17 Kaileia Villavicencio (Archbishop McCarthy); #20 LilyAna Calzadilla (Lincoln Park)
Opening round match to watch: #22 Samantha Tobia (Park Vista) vs. Christelle Joseph (North Miami)
Kabra says: Silva is unbeaten on the season and the pick to win here. Six more ranked wrestlers will battle it out for the other three spots and any of them could book a ticket to Kissimmee.
Kabra's Picks
1. #3 Isis Severe (North Miami)
2. #4 Eysis Estes-Brinson (Miami Palmetto)
3. #14 Abigail Moyer (Coral Springs)
4. #24 Chloelynn Caldwell (Centennial)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #23 Hailey Hernandez (SW Miami); Eva Sorokorensky (Boca Raton)
Opening round match to watch: Sorokorensky vs. Jayalynn Gutierrez (South Broward)
Kabra says: We keep talking about this matchup, even though Severe has been winning it most of the time. The North Miami senior improved her record to 4-1 in matches between she and Estes-Brinson, all of them by decision.
Kabra's Picks
1. #6 Arianna Garcia (South Dade)
2. #7 Alexa Paz (SLAM Academy)
3. #24 Takyla Jackson (Westwood)
4. #25 Shyonte Stinson (Vero Beach)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: Nylah Smith (Coral Springs); Asia Bueno-Taveras (Suncoast)
Opening round match to watch: Bueno-Taveras vs. Stinson
Kabra says: Garcia gets the nod in what we expect to be a district final rematch in the finals here. The South Dade junior has beaten the SLAM Academy senior in both matches they’ve competed this season. The rest of this bracket looks wide open with no real favorites to earn the third and fourth spots.
Kabra's Picks
1. #3 Shamari Smith (South Dade)
2. #8 Francesca Lara (Miami Palmetto)
3. #17 London Yelder (Everglades)
4. #19 Scarlett Sans (SW Miami)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: Ta'Nodja Williams (Westwood); Aubrey Brunnett (Jupiter)
Opening round match to watch: Natalie Reed (Centennial) vs. Kamila Castillo (Dr. Krop)
Kabra says: In her first season with South Dade, Smith has one of the best in the state and topped Lara in the district final. Lara and Yelder are on track to meet in the semifinals here, the Miami Palmetto senior is 2-0 between the two.
Kabra's Picks
1. #2 Kha'liyah Delva (Fort Pierce Central)
2. #12 Viktoriya Devochkina (North Miami)
3. #9 Geraldine Honore (South Dade)
4. #15 Carmen Dragustiovis (Miami Coral Park)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #16 Allison Blanco-Cruz (Olympic Heights); #17 Anna-Sofia Baker (Archbishop McCarthy)
Opening round match to watch: Emily Balk (Douglas) vs. Alexandra Klimesova (Western)
Kabra says: The two best wrestlers in the weight class are in the top half of this bracket. Delva, a state finalist a year ago, has looked solid all season and is a state title contender. She also has a win over Honore in her collection.
Kabra's Picks
1. #1 Mya Bethel (North Miami)
2. #5 Chrystal Desir (Forest Hill)
3. #2 Alena Rik (Mater Lakes Academy)
4. #13 Emily Pomar (Ferguson)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #16 Sofia Toledo (Wellington); #20 Valentina Mora (Miami Beach)
Opening round match to watch: Chaniya Saintil (Lincoln Park) vs. Maryaliz Bernardina (Coral Springs)
Kabra says: One of the best to ever do it, Bethel is working to become the first four-time Florida state girls champion and she’s looking to do it without a single loss in her high school career. Rik is the #2 ranked girl in the state but fell into the same half of the bracket as Bethel.
Kabra's Picks
1. #5 Shenshaila Baron (North Miami)
2. #7 Mia Johnson (Fort Pierce Central)
3. #6 Ariana Blanc (Douglas)
4. #9 Quisiera Wilson (Lincoln Park)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #14 Ariel Alexander (Homestead); #15 Jada Haughton (Dr. Krop)
Opening round match to watch: #17 Amaris Echezerrata (South Dade) vs. #21 Nelca Fleurigene (Palm Beach Gardens)
Kabra says: Oh this one feels like a toss-up. Baron has wins over Johnson (MD) and Blanc (10-6), so she is the logical and worthy favorite, but this bracket is loaded the top and throughout it too. There are 10 wrestlers in the Top 25 competing here.
Kabra's Picks
1. #4 Latoya Sylvestre (South Broward)
2. #5 Tessa Diaz (Doral Academy)
3. #12 Neveah Robinson (Okeechobee)
4. #13 Arheanna Bryan (Coral Springs)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #15 Tacara Nixon (Miami Norland); #17 Joveline Joseph (North Miami)
Opening round match to watch: Kaelyn Toombs (Lincoln Park) vs. Amirah Williams (South Dade)
Kabra says: The only reason Sylvestre is only ranked #4 in the state is because there are three returning state champions above her. She’s gone undefeated thus far this season and owns wins against Diaz, Robinson, and Nixon.
Kabra's Picks
1. #7 Camila Bravo (SW Miami)
2. #8 Kenzie Barrett (South Dade)
3. #11 Naomi Arias (Doral Academy)
4. #16 Dynasty Gass (Deerfield Beach)
Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #18 Colmise JeanBaptiste (North Miami); #19 Kaylie Eugene (Flanagan)
Opening round match to watch: JeanBaptiste vs. Eugene
Kabra says: Bravo and Barrett are 2-2 this season according to our records with the SW Miami sophomore getting the best of the two in their latest meeting in the district final. It’s crazy that in the first year of sanctioned girls wrestling, there were just four heavyweights in this region tournament. This year’s bracket featured nine ranked wrestlers.
