Girls Region 1A-2: Preview and Predictions

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2025 - at Kissimmee Osceola High School

Welcome to one of my favorite traditions - the region previews.

For those that are reading one for the first time, here's a quick summary of what the region preview is.

I start first by printing out each bracket - yes, this is one of the things I'm old school on.

I notate where wrestlers are ranked in the Kabra Wrestling Rankings and then start to break it down even more.

I look for head-to-head matchups, common opponents, and how each wrestler has been trending in the stretch run.

I then question my rankings - and myself - and play out the entire bracket.

What follows is my best guess for how G1A-2 will play out.

You can print the G1A-2 region bracket here. (PDF)

I've carefully predicted the four state qualifiers in the order that I think they will finish. I've also listed wrestlers that could prove me wrong and make it to Kissimmee.

I will be wrong with these picks, and I'm okay with that. In fact, I love when kids prove me wrong (or prove me right). We even have the stickers to hand out.

These previews and predictions are meant to bring excitement to one of the most exhilarating and heartbreaking weekends in sports.

I assure you that I have no bias in my picks and truly wish the best for every wrestler competing this weekend.

And as always, these picks are for entertainment purposes only.

Now onto the preview:

Kabra's Picks

1. #5 Aniyah Whayne (Kissimmee Osceola)

2. #8 Emerson Webber (Hernando)

3. #9 Hananeel Gregoire (Orlando Freedom)

4. #18 Zahar Zouaki (Viera)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #20 Aubrey McNichols (Harmony); #23 Jayla Azcona (Bartow)

Opening round match to watch: #22 Annamarie Eder (Cocoa Beach) vs. Azcona

Kabra says: The top of this podium could go any of three different ways. Wayne, Webber, and Gregoire are all capable of winning this weight class and we don’t have any meetings to base this one. It’s also a key weight class in the team race.

Kabra's Picks

1. #5 Miayalee Ortiz Martinez (George Jenkins)

2. #6 Madelyne Bombardier (Mulberry)

3. #7 Elizabeth Pinto (Viera)

4. #10 Alea Morales (Kissimmee Osceola)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #12 Yhoalibeth Ruiz (Orlando Freedom); #15 Elle Bryant (Titusville)

Opening round match to watch: Bryant vs. #20 Hanna Perez (Ocoee)

Kabra says: Oritz Martinez and Bombardier have each won a match against the other and Pinto should be in the mix also. Eight wrestlers in the Top 20 are in this bracket and that should make for tight consolation round matches even before the blood round.

Kabra's Picks

1. #4 Keana Bush (Hernando)

2. #7 Julia Brocato (Sunlake)

3. #15 Amileshka Ortiz (Lake Gibson)

4. #19 Paige Ballard (Bartow)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #20 Joyce Blanc (Palm Bay); #25 Josie Reeves (Orlando Freedom)

Opening round match to watch: Brooke Pickering (Land O’ Lakes) vs. Sofia Ramos (Harmony)

Kabra says: Two-time state placer Bush is on a mission in her final high school season. She defeated Brocato in their district final last week and could be on track for another meeting here. The rest of the podium should see some exciting battles with no-less-than seven wrestlers talented enough to book a trip to Silver Spurs.

Kabra's Picks

1. #3 Emma Bauknight (Hernando)

2. #4 Catalina Kenney (Viera)

3. #5 Cameron Lord (Sunlake)

4. #12 Joya Hodge (Tampa Freedom)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #13 Deleilah Viteri (Horizon); #21 Isabel Duarte (Orlando Freedom)

Opening round match to watch: Jery Giddens (Nature Coast) vs. Duarte

Kabra says: Oh what a weight class. A potential semifinals meeting between Kenney and Lord could move the winner to the final against Bauknight. Kenney enters the weekend undefeated with Bauknight’s instate losses coming at the hands of the top two wrestlers in the state.

Kabra's Picks

1. #2 Jasmine Serrano (Springstead)

2. #4 Isabel Alvarez (Viera)

3. #10 Alianna Mason (Orlando Freedom)

4. #19 Leila Memon (East Lake)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #23 Nathalia Espinal (Hernando); Marlee Karounos (Horizon)

Opening round match to watch: Camilla Alderman (Sunlake) vs. Trynity Bradley (George Jenkins)

Kabra says: Serrano has a technical fall win over Alvarez this season and the two will look to renew ties in the final here. Mason will look to shake things up and get some key points for the Patriots.

Kabra's Picks

1. #3 Paola Ramirez (Kissimmee Osceola)

2. #21 Olivia Gapud (Viera)

3. #5 Daniella Espinal (Hernando)

4. #23 Kirah McSweeney (Satellite)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: Bailee Spitulski (Ocoee); Izabella Kullman (Sunlake)

Opening round match to watch: Kullman vs. McSweeney

Kabra says: This bracket might be won in the semifinals with Ramirez and Espinal in the bottom half together. The rest of the field includes six wrestlers who are either ranked or are just on the outskirts of Kabra Wrestling’s Top 25.

Kabra's Picks

1. #6 Kiley Earle (McKeel)

2. #7 Gabrielle Asabi (Sunlake)

3. #8 Eduarda Franklin Soares (Orlando Freedom)

4. #19 Kiley Vinson (Harmony)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #21 Elysse Fredenburg (Cocoa Beach); #22 Alondra Santana-Perez (Hernando)

Opening round match to watch: #25 Elisa Medina (Tohopekaliga) vs. Maria Peoples (Bartow)

Kabra says: The top half of the bracket could see a Top 10 matchup in the semifinals with Asabi and Soares both there. Asabi is 3-0 on the season against Soares with wins being sudden victory, major decision, and fall. Earle has just one loss and if she’s in bottom half against one of the other two, it can be called a toss-up.

Kabra's Picks

1. #2 Emma Hoppe (Viera)

2. #4 Kaitelynn Oliver (Lake Gibson)

3. #5 Jayla Sanders (Bartow)

4. #8 Ceajah Brown (Orlando Freedom)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #10 Genesis Fuentes (Kissimmee Osceola); #21 Malia Rezac (Sunlake)

Opening round match to watch: Grace Reek (Bayside) vs. Jenysis Dorsey (Oak Ridge)

Kabra says: There are five wrestlers in the Top 10 in this bracket. It’s a tough one. The race for the top could come from the three in the Top 5. Oliver topped Sanders in the district final but neither of those two have faced Hoppe this season.

Kabra's Picks

1. #5 Denalie Dauphin (Kissimmee Osceola)

2. #9 Nicolette Watson (Wiregrass Ranch)

3. #7 Olivia Brown (Hernando)

4. #11 Amal Mena Dahdal (Land O' Lakes)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #18 Tracy Saintil (Evans); #20 Sky Athey (Orlando Freedom)

Opening round match to watch: #12 Alexandria Groppe (Hudson) vs. #21 Ryauna Mepomuceno (Rockledge)

Kabra says: Dauphin and Brown are poised to meet in the semifinals. The Osceola senior has a win by fall this season. The top semifinal could also see a rematch as Watson earned a 7-1 victory over Dahdal this season.

Kabra's Picks

1. #1 Kristy More (Sunlake)

2. #4 Ericka Hernandez (Kissimmee Osceola)

3. #6 Sariana Jones (Auburndale)

4. #8 Elody Rodriguez (Orlando Freedom)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #13 Arianna Antoniou (East Lake); #21 Lillian Staessley (Viera)

Opening round match to watch: #19 Makenzie Eltzroth (Hernando) vs. #20 Sariah Franco (Orlando Cypress Creek)

Kabra says: The four district champions are ranked in the Top 8 and we are predicting them to finish 1-4 here and head to Kissimmee together. More has wins over Jones and Rodriguez this season.

Kabra's Picks

1. #6 Mariah Earl (Hernando)

2. #7 Jikayla Hutto (Orlando Freedom)

3. #9 Alyssa Gerber (George Jenkins)

4. #12 Emily McCormack (Windermere)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #25 Zuhaily Caffery (Harmony); Jaliah Burnett (Boone)

Opening round match to watch: Abigail Reid (Tohopekaliga) vs. Burnett

Kabra says: With wins over Hutto and Gerber, Earl heads into the weekend as the favorite here. The returning state placer was lucked the harder side of the bracket with five other wrestlers in the bottom half with a legit shot to reach the state tournament.

Kabra's Picks

1. #1 Megan Preston (Wiregrass Ranch)

2. #4 Chloe Stinnett (Hernando)

3. #12 Chloe Riley (Orlando Freedom)

4. #13 Lily Tucker (Kissimmee Osceola)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #23 Maria Paterakis (Dr. Phillips); Nevaeh Tedeman (Pasco)

Opening round match to watch: Leila Vasquez (River Ridge) vs. Bella Wall (Harmony)

Kabra says: Preston reached the state final last season and has gone through this year undefeated. Preston and Stinnett are the favorites on paper to reach the final and the Wiregrass Ranch senior owns a win between the two.

Kabra's Picks

1. #1 Grace Leota (Hernando)

2. #6 Paisley Murphy (Sunlake)

3. #7 Mekialla Mauvais (Orlando Freedom)

4. #11 Vanessa McCloud (Merritt Island)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #10 Savannah Nazario (Viera); #18 Ky'mari Riley (Tampa Freedom)

Opening round match to watch: #18 Ky'mari Riley (Tampa Freedom) vs. Nayla Jaime (St. Cloud)

Kabra says: Two-time state champion Leota enters the weekend ranked #1 in the state and undefeated on the season. The intriguing match here to watch for is a potential quarterfinal contest between Murphy and Mauvais.

Kabra's Picks

1. #3 Rotchiva Clermont (Orlando Freedom)

2. #1 Mia Jones (Mulberry)

3. #6 Yamii Herring (Ocoee)

4. #15 Claudia Barillas (Rockledge)

Wrestlers who could prove me wrong: #13 Katelynn Holt (Harmony); #25 Kearri Jones (Haines City)

Opening round match to watch: Jones vs. Herring

Kabra says: Okay, we’re going against our rankings here. Not as a knock against the top-ranked Jones, who owns a win this season over the Freedom senior, but because Clermont has been red-hot and recently beat Herring, who topped Jones back in Week 6.
