41 notable upsets from Week 6

BY BRANT PARSONS — The first week in January gave us lots of fireworks on the mat as we ramped back up into the second half of the season.

We’ve compiled a list of “upsets” from this past weekend based on the Kabra Wrestling rankings.

These are a small selection of big wins that have taken place since we last updated the rankings and would be considered upsets by Kabra Wrestling. We didn’t get them all, but we tried to get as many notables ones as we could.

When the new rankings come out, these likely will no longer appear as upsets, and later in the season, they may really not look like upsets - but for now, let’s look at some of the shockers for Week 6.

165: #3-157 Enzo Gamba (Fernandina Beach) dec. #1 Willie White (SW Miami) 8-4

165: #3-157 Enzo Gamba (Fernandina Beach) p. #1-157 Gavin Balmeceda (South Dade)

Not many had as good a weekend as the Pirates senior, who toppled two top-ranked wrestlers on his way to a Cradle Cancer crown.

106: #2 Solomon Peterson (Heritage) p. #1 Matthew Schuler (Charlotte)

Peterson was a man on a mission at Jensen Beach and took this semifinal match quickly.

113: #2 Malachi Ortiz (Tampa Jesuit) dec. #1 Landon Quiroga (Merritt Island) 11-8

Just two weeks after Quiroga's one-point win at the Knockout, Ortiz takes this one in a higher-scoring decision.

The win wasn't enough for MLA to overcome Somerset in the district duals final.

Bates prevailed between the two in the third place match at the Cradle.

190: #5 Rafael Lopez (Somerset) maj. #3 Kevin Breton (MLA) 8-0

Rodriguez' win was part of Winter Springs' district duals title at the Nathan Brouwer Memorial.
