You pick: Vote for your Reader’s Choice Wrestlers of the Week for Week 9

BY BRANT PARSONS — After a week off following state duals, the Reader’s Choice Wrestler of the Week competition is back.

You know the drill, vote for the boys and girls wrestler you think deserves the honor this week. You can vote once every hour.

Here are the nominations to choose from for the Reader’s Choice Wrestler of the Week.

This week’s nominations

Girls

Callie Alfieri (Gulf): The North Central College commit pinned the third-ranked girl in the state in the finals at Lake Mary.

Emma Bauknight (Hernando): Topped the Lady Rams bracket with two Top 7 wins.

Cheyenne Cruce (Middleburg): Won in an ultimate tie-breaker at the Lady Rams to beat her closest challenger at 190 pounds.

Abby Dicenzo (Bell Creek): Earned the title at Lake Mary in a bracket that included three of the top five wrestlers in the state.

Sofia Ferran (Mater Lakes): Avenged some losses from earlier in the season and beat two Top 3 wrestlers at the Lady Rams.

Jikayla Hutto (Jones): Took home the Metro title with a pin fall over the third-ranked wrestler in the state in the final.

Emily Jaspe (Mater Academy): Finished in first place at the Moskowitz IBT.

Boys

Raymond Cavey (West Orange): Cavey earned one of the biggest upsets of the weekend, besting the top-ranked Class 3A wrestler in the final at Timber Creek.

Austin Chung (Lake Gibson): For the second straight weekend, Chung upended the wrestler above him in the rankings, this time he earned a title at the Colby.

Gunner Holland (Kissimmee Osceola): Avenged a loss from the state duals in another 1-2 matchup in Class 3A. Holland's win by pin moved him back to the top spot.

*Holland’s teammate Anderson Heap also deserves to be listed among the nominations, but we try to not dilute the vote by making fans of a school have to pick between two wrestlers.

Jett McCauley (Charlotte): Defeated the #1 wrestler in Class 3A in the finals of teh Colby Singletary.

Myron Mendez (SW Miami): Picked up an upset win in the final and the title belt at Live Greco.

Erick Vargas (Lakeland): Served notice to the rest of Class 2A with an upset win over the #2 wrestler at 113 pounds in the Moskowitz IBT final.

Luke Williams (Brandon): Finished in first place at the Palmetto Pride IBT and then was accepted into Duke University.
