Elite girls tournament at Orlando Freedom highlights weekend

BY BRANT PARSONS — Not long after the state tournament back in March, Orlando Freedom coach David Bush began working on an idea to bring as many of the top girls wrestlers in the state as he could to a newly created girls tournament.

“I think this will end up being a good one for the girls,” Bush texted back in March. “I want to create a little pre-state showing.”

That little pre-state showing grew quickly and by early August the tournament was full of some of the best wrestlers in the state - though that hasn’t stopped people from wanting to get in.

“I have teams still asking if they can get in,” Bush said this week. “I told them I had to stop it somewhere since it’s only a one-day tournament.”

The event, called the Let Freedom Ring Girls IBT, is taking place on Saturday and will feature nine of the state’s top 10 girls teams and 16 of the top 20.

Out of the over 160 possible ranked wrestlers who might compete this weekend, 12 of the state’s 14 top-ranked wrestlers could take the mat on Saturday in what surely will be the first peek at what the state tournament could look like.

“I’m excited to get some great competition and hopefully get better,” Satellite senior Lucy Maris said. Maris is ranked No. 1 at 135 pounds entering the weekend. “It will be good to wrestle girls who also want to get better and it will help me be better prepared for the state tournament.”

Each weight class at the tournament will be broken down into two weight classes due to the high number of wrestlers competing and five match limit for a one-day tournament.

The top 16 wrestlers in each weight class will be placed in an “A” bracket, while the rest will compete in another bracket.

Wrestling will begin at Orlando Freedom High School at 10:30 a.m.
