Featured Dual: Satellite excites crowd in “Battle of the Beach” win

BY BRANT PARSONS — In front of a packed in-school crowd, #16-2A Satellite topped Cocoa Beach 53-27 to take home the Battle of the Beach tiki.

The Scorpions started the day strong with the gym erupting when senior Quran Mighty started things off with first period pin at 285 pounds.

“They know when something cool happens,” Satellite coach David McMiller said of the student crowd. “The energy they bring makes for a fun dual meet and it is special for our kids.”

Jake Giovino kept the crowd humming with a second period pin over Anthony Acquafredda at 106 pounds to put Satellite up 12-0.

Cocoa Beach’s Mario Del Vecchio responded with a solid technical fall win over Nolan West at 113 pounds before Satellite won three straight.

Alex McMiller (120), Blaze Holly (126), and Anthony Dicks (132) all scored wins by fall to keep the crowd humming.

“We’ve never done this before and the crowd was so loud,” Alex McMiller said of the in-school dual. “I’m glad I got to do it my senior year in front of my friends.”

After a string of five forfeits, Satellite continued the run on mat with Ryan Beirne and Michael McCarthy winning to close out the Scorpion scoring.

“I’ve been here four years and we’ve only had one home dual,” David McMiller said. “It’s a great way to have one and maybe we’ll have a few kids in the stands want to know more about what we are doing here and come out.”
