Defending state champ, others win district titles | Daily recap

BY BRANT PARSONS — Defending Class 2A state duals champion Lake Gibson started its quest for a seventh duals title on Wednesday, winning the 2A-7 district crown at Auburndale.

After topping the hosts in the semifinals, the Braves toppled Lakeland 69-6 in the final.

Jeffrey Messner (120), Tyler White (126), Jordan Harrison (132), Isaac Lowe (138), Gabriel Samano (144), Noah Gregory (150), Leandre Campbell (157), Husam Mustafa (165), Brayden Kahelin (175), Mason Desandolo (190), Gabrial Solis (215), William Bush (285), and RJ Phelan (106) all had wins in the final.

Dolphins win district title

Gulf Breeze went 3-0 to win the Class 2A-1 district duals title on Wednesday.

The Dolphins blanked Tate 81-0, toppled Niceville 54-26 and then outscored Pace 43-35 in the final.

Going 3-0 on the night for Gulf Breeze was Ryder Cohen (106), Garrett Ferguson (113), Gavin Samons (120), Keegan Deeds (126), Gavin Cohen (150), and Xavier Gallagher (192).

River Ridge edges Springstead for title

Heading into the final match of the 2A-5, River Ridge needed a big win from its heavyweight Arthur Winstanley.

The Royal Knights trailed Springstead 40-36 and the sophomore delivered, winning by fall 1:00 minute into the match to give River Ridge the district title.

"We knew it was going to be a close dual with Springstead and it might come down to the heavyweight match,” coach JT Heckler Said. “Arthur Winstanley rose to the occasion and got the six points we needed to win the dual. Very proud of all of our wrestlers for their hard work, sacrifices, and dedication to sport to meet our goals."

Tampa Jesuit wins 2A-6

Host Tampa Jesuit easily won the 2A-6 district duals title on Wednesday night.

The Tigers knocked off Pasco 61-3 in the final after blanking WC Cypress Creek 79-0 in the semifinals.

Horizon takes home 3A-4 crown

Horizon battled to a district duals title on Wednesday, beating South Lake in the final 39-33. The Hawks also squeaked out a 40-36 win over host Ocoee.

Going unbeaten on the night for Horizon was Michael Verdi (106) and Joey Torres (138).

The Hawks will host the region round next Thursday night.

George Jenkins rolls

In 3A-5, George Jenkins proved to be a giant, winning the school’s first-ever district duals title while only giving up 21 points in three matches, beating Haines City 75-5, Davenport 76-6, and Bartow 70-10.

The Eagles had 3-0 unbeaten nights from Joseph Handley (106), Andrew Taylor (113), Everett Smith (120), Michael Woodruff (132), Jackson Lietz (175), Raymond Shaw (190), and Elliot Ortiz (285).

Palm Harbor University earns win

Palm Harbor University defeated Steinbrenner in the final of the 3A-6 district dual to win the title.

Steinbrenner earned the runner-up spot after beating Land O’Lakes 42-35 in the semifinals and then edging Sunlake 41-39 in the true second match.

Douglas wins

Douglas topped Coral Springs 47-35 in the 3A-13 district duals final to earn a spot in the next round.

In the final, Bryce Siddens (106), Timothy Carroll (113), Arav Shintre (120), David Leiva (126), James Messmer (132), Santiago Caro (138), Jacob Belk (150), and Jackson Zajkowski (285) all registered wins for the Eagles.

Menendez tops 1A-5

Pedro Menendez outscored Citrus 52-28 to win the 1A-5 district duals title.

In the final, the Falcons got wins from Mark Denman (120), Nikolas Thorn (126), Matthew Thorn (132), Phillip McLaughlin (150), Liam Molloy (157), Evan Chatterton (165), Maddoxx Lehmann (190), Joseph Soto (215), and Ransom Rhodes (285).

Robinson is tops in 1A-10

Robinson topped Berkeley Prep in the final to win the 1A-10 district duals title.

The Knights had nine wrestlers go 3-0.

Duals recap

A heavy individual duals schedule also dotted the landscape with #12-2A Braden River besting #18-3A Venice 42-36.

American Heritage, Fletcher, Fort Myers Gateway, Homestead, Tocoi Creek and Vero Beach all picked up wins.
