25 notable upsets from Week 3

We think so.

We’ve compiled a list of “upsets” based on the Kabra Wrestling rankings.

These are a small selection of big wins this weekend that in their frozen moment in time, were considered upsets by Kabra Wrestling.

When the new rankings come out tomorrow, these likely will no longer appear as upsets, and later in the season, they may really not look like upsets - but for now, let’s celebrate the big ones for Week 3.

The Big Ones

#2 Kailani Barrientos (Oakleaf) dec. #1 Callie Alfieri (Gulf) 6-3

Both wrestlers have been #1 this season and Barrientos won this 1-2 matchup with three takedowns.

#4 Myron Mendez (SW Miami) dec. #1 Christopher Sanchez (South Dade) 10-7

After Sanchez won their first two meetings this season, Mendez picked up the win - and three dual points for the Eagles.

#5 Giovanni Duany (Lake Brantley) d. #1 James Gonzalez (Winter Park)

The Lake Brantley senior beat the top-ranked wrestler twice last week - a 2-1 win in the District Duals and a pinfall in the Bill Scott final.

#7 Mac Andrews (Wellington) dec. #1 Giovanni Deangeles (Park Vista) 3-2

Andrews knocked off the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class in a barn burner.

The Other Big Ones

#9 David de Armas (Doral Academy) dec. #6 Damonyai White (Lake Mary) 12-11

A one-point decision in the finals of the Bill Scott.

#6-2A Husam Mustafa (Lake Wales) d. #3-1A Alexander Roman (Avon Park)

Mustafa went 9-0 at the Polk County Duals and and knocked off the Top 3 wrestler in the state.

#6 Jonathan Moreno (South Dade) dec. #4 Drake Bonney (Miami Palmetto) 11-7

The Bucs freshman made his first appearace of the season at the District Duals and this was one of his seven wins.

#13 Claire O'Donnell (Canterbury) p. #8 Mya Bolden (Port Charlotte)

O'Donnell's run to her first tournament win of the season saw this semifinal upset at the Queen of the Jungle

#13 Brayden Hogg (Jensen Beach) dec. #2 Trenton Hogan (Lincoln Park) 9-7

Hogg's decision win was part of Jensen Beach's district duals championship.

#14-2A Kevin Salas (Fort Myers) dec. #2-1A Ben Norris (Jensen Beach) TB-1 3-2

This upset at the 132-pound weight class came at the Gene Gorman at Charlotte.

#15 Andrea Garcia (Riverdale) dec. #3 Emma Bauknight (Hernando) 6-2

#15 Andrea Garcia (Riverdale) dec. #4 Paola Ramirez (Kissimmee Osceola) 10-3

The 115-pound sophomore knocked off #4 in the semifinal and #3 in the final at Freedom.

#10 Aiden Madden (Fort Pierce Central) p. #7 Jordan Hayes (Viera)

Madden got the best of Hayes in their district dual meeting.

#19 Carson Estrada (Harmony) dec. #5 Nathan Barrett (Tohopekaliga)

Eight months after ACL surgery, the Longhorn senior won his first tournament of the season with a 9-5 win in the final of the Longhorn Classic.

Rankings Shifters

#18 Shantavous White (Jupiter) dec. #6 Maximillian Taboada (West Broward) 5-3

#18 Shantavous White (Jupiter) d. #16 Joel Leon (Seminole Ridge)

The junior picked up two ranked wins this week, including knocking off #6 in the GillisStrong final.

#14 Jason Schiavello (CCC) p. #9 Raymen Jackson (Palm Bay)

The third place match at the Bradenton Battle saw the CCC freshman pull off the upset.

#14 Genesis Turrubiartez (Immokalee) dec. #8 Anisah Paz (South Dade) 5-4

#14 Genesis Turrubiartez (Immokalee) maj. #10 Noelia Varela (Riverdale)

Turrubiartez picked up two upsets at Freedom on her way to a third place finish.

UNR Elan Bennett (Viera) d. #16 Jack Duke (Martin County)

UNR Elan Bennett (Viera) d. #19 Jayden Romanello (Fort Pierce Central)

The Viera senior picked up two Top 20 wins while helping the Hawks to their first-ever District Duals title.

UNR Jason Marsala (Chiles) p. #12 Preston King (Lincoln)

Down 6-0, Marsala hung tough and got the win by fall.

#12 Vincenzo Lee (Springstead) dec. #11 Francesco Alagna (WC Cypress Creek) 7-4

A tight match in both rankings and on the mat, with Lee getting the best of the wrestler above him.

#20 Talan Babin (Ponte Vedra) dec. #12 Ladarius Jackson (Fleming Island) 3-1

Babin knocked off #12 on his way to winning the IBT portion of the Keystone Memorial.

UNR Matthew Thaxton (Wakulla) p. #20-2A Jacob Jackson (Westside)

The Wakulla freshman earn this win at the Raider Duals.
