Steady Fleming Island sets up big state semifinal with region title win
KISSIMMEE — For #3 Fleming Island, it was business as usual in the region duals finals on Friday at the FHSAA State Duals Tournament.
The Golden Eagles advanced after winning their seventh region duals title in as many years, toppling #6 Lincoln 48-21.
Fleming Island won two of the dual’s one-point matches and also tallied seven wins by pinfall to advance to the state semifinals.
“We’re just out there competing and focusing on the match in front of us,” Fleming Island coach PJ Cobbert said.
The dual started tight with the first three matches being decided by a total of four points.
Ryder Luck (285) and Preston King (106) each earned tight decisions to give Lincoln a 6-0 lead to start. Matthew Newman that scored a one-point decision to cut the Trojans lead in half.
Then Fleming Island went on a roll.
Jordan Mukaddam (120); Shane Duhaylungsod (126), Joseph Forte (132), and Laird Duhaylungsod (138) then won four straight matches by pin and the Golden Eagles were on their way.
“I know we are in great shape and put in the work,” Cobbert said.
Caleb King slowed the Fleming Island parade momentarily with a win at 144 pounds.
But the Golden Eagles bounced back to win the next four bouts. Kaden Schaefer (150), Dylan Beck (157), Matthew Kotler (165), and Christopher Chop (175) finished the scoring with wins.
Lincoln got wins from Nick Blanca (190) and Jordan Baker (215) to end the dual.
Fleming Island will face Lake Gibson in the next round, a rematch of last year’s state duals final.
The semifinals take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kissimmee Osceola High School. Tickets can be purchased here.
