KISSIMMEE — BY BRANT PARSONS — South Dade coach Vic Balmeceda didn’t know what to expect from his team ahead of the FHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Silver Spurs Arena.
His team had suffered through unexpected losses, injuries, and even missed weights in the postseason and it left Balmeceda wondering which South Dade team would show up this weekend.
It was the team you expect from South Dade as the Buccaneers roared to victory, scoring 227.5 points, finishing with six state champions and placing nine wrestlers in the final. It was South Dade’s 20th IBT team title and 27th team state title in wrestling. The Bucs have won the team title in Class 3A every year since 2014.
“The questions coming in is what is making this win even sweeter is because they got into this building and they light up man, they come alive,” Balmeceda said on Saturday night. “Some of the kids had strange losses throughout the year where you didn’t expect them to lose and it was frustrating because I knew our potential was high.”
Guillermo Jaramillo (126), Jovani Solis (138), Elvis Solis (144), Armand Williams (150), Tyree Graham (157), and Willie White (165) all won individual state titles for the Bucs. Kaleb Williams (120), Jonathan Moreno (175), and Daguy Massillon (285) also reached the finals for South Dade.
“These kids never cease to amaze me when they come into this building,” Balmeceda said. “They are truly at the peak performance that they could be at and when other kids are crumbling and breaking, they rise to the occasion.”
Kabra Wrestling will be doing features on individual state champions in the coming weeks
