Which region won the state tournament?

BY BRANT PARSONS — As much as I love telling stories, deep down inside I’m a numbers guy.

And an Excel guy. (You should see the Excel doc I have for wrestling).

Turns out that Hagerty coach Scotty Diaz is the same way.

After a quick offseason exchange, the Hagerty head man sent me a project he was working on - breaking down the final places by region for each classification in the state.

It was right up my alley and something that I had planned to do as part of my state tournament recapping.

I asked Diaz for permission to use his work and he accepted. Thank you Coach Diaz for what follows.

Superlatives

MOST STATE CHAMPIONS: 10, 3A-2 and 2A-3

MOST STATE FINALISTS: 15, 3A-2

MOST TOTAL MEDALS: 38, 2A-3 and 1A-4

MOST PLACEMENT POINTS: 336, 1A-4

Girls

The first ever girls state tournament was also the only tournament this weekend that had multiple state champions from each region.

Region 1 led the way with six state champions and 33 total medalists while Region 2’s state placers accounted for more placement points with 23 of the 30 medal winners in the region finishing in the top five.

Class 3A

Region 2 proved to be one of the best across the state with 10 champions, 15 finalists and 37 total medal winners.

Region 4 had three state champions while nearly catching Region 2 for total medals with seven wrestlers from Region 4 placing third and seventh.

Region 3 had the other state champion in Class 3A.

Class 2A

The successes of Region 3 and 2 in Class 2A should not be a shock to anyone. Region 3 led the way with 10 state champions, 11 finalists and 38 total medalists, but Region 2 also fared well with 3 champions, 10 finalists and 37 medal winners.

Region brought 7 to finals with state champ coming out of the bunch.

Class 1A

With five of the top six teams coming from Region 4, these numbers shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody.

Region four led the way with 8 state champions, 14 finalists, 38 medalists and 336 placement points.

The rest of the classification was much more balanced with all three regions represented in each category.
