KISSIMMEE — As state title journeys go, Tampa Jesuit conquered one of the toughest roads to win its second Class 2A State Duals title at Kissimmee Osceola High School on Saturday.

The Tigers topped Charlotte 59-13 in the final on Saturday to end a weekend that saw them beat rival and six-time state duals champion Lake Gibson in the region final and two-time champ Somerset by six points in the state semifinals.

Jesuit did not show any sign of letdown in the final, winning the first five matches and never looking back.

“It was really important to not change anything that we were doing because the job wasn’t finished,” senior Draven McCall said. “We just needed to keep wrestling hard the whole time.”

Kawayran Vazquez led off the final dual with a first period pin at 157 pounds. McCall followed at 165 with a first period pin of his own.

Aidan Garrity (175), Robert Bossowski (190), and Marvin Mendez (215) combined for 16 more Jesuit points to give the Tigers a 28-0 lead.

Charlotte would claw back with three wins in the next four matches. Jaxon Newton scored a pin at 285 pounds, Matthew Schuler majored his opponent at 106 before Jesuit’s Brock Glover put six points on the board at 113.

Jake Austin then avenged a one-point loss from earlier in the season with an 11-5 win over Malachi Ortiz at 120 pounds.

The Tigers completed the dual win with wins from Reid Yakes (126), John Alvarado (132), Jayden Bowles (138), Xavier Albo (144), and Mason Basile (150).

“Charlotte have a great program and you have to be ready wrestle every single time against them,” Coach Sal Basile said. “It was an awesome team effort by us and we had a lot of guys step up and that’s what it takes to win team titles. We had 14 guys that produced and contributed.”

Semifinals

Tampa Jesuit reached the state finals with a thrilling 34-28 win over Somerset.

The Tigers trailed the back-and-forth match with two matches to go before Bowles and Albo rallied Jesuit to the win.

“It was a lot of hard wrestling in two days and I’m really proud of them,” Basile said. “The team atmosphere is what we are about. We’re not about individuals and All-Stars and these guys are really tight from to bottom.”

Charlotte reached the school’s second duals final with a 49-21 win over Clay.

The Tarpons won 9 of the 14 matches to advance.
