Jensen Beach completes season double with IBT wrestling title

BY BRANT PARSONS — A lot of sports teams will talk about how a win was all about the team but it was true this past weekend for Jensen Beach.

The Falcons won their first-ever state FHSAA State Wrestling Tournament title on Saturday at Silver Spurs Arena when they took home the Class 1A title by 50 points over runner-up First Baptist-Naples.

Nine of the 11 Jensen Beach wrestlers brought to Kissimmee ended the night on the podium as the Falcons completed the season double after winning the FHSAA State Wrestling Duals title in January.

“It’s been a historic season for us and I couldn’t be more proud of our kids,” Jensen Beach coach Tom McMath said. “They worked hard all year, they believed in each other and were battle tested and came out here and did what they did.”

Sebastian Degennaro and Jewell Williams both won individual state titles to cap off the night for Falcons with Degennaro topping First Baptist’s Jonathan Moder in the 106-pound final and Williams winning at 138 pounds.

Ryan Duguay (2nd-132), Ryan Mooney (3rd-120), Jonny Dobbs (3rd-126), Matt O’Hara (3rd-195), Dylan Fox (5th-152), Nate Sopotnick (5th-170) and Gian Ortiz (6th-113) all ended up on the podium for Jensen Beach.

“This team has been in the kids clubs since they were little,” McMath said. “This is a homegrown team and we knew this was a possibility for a long time and to see them put in the work and do it is something special.”

First Baptist stormed into second place with all seven of its wrestlers in Kissimmee placing as the second-year program finished as runners-up in Class 1A.

Christian Moder placed first at 170 pounds, finishing off his season with a 7-0 victory over Lemon Bay’s Chase Alden in the final.

First Baptist also had state finalists with Jonathan Moder (106) and Andres DiGrigoli (113) finishing second.

Michael Kersey (4th-120), Gavin Patton (4th-145), Caleb Rodrigez (4th-285), and Joe Castellone (8th-138) also placed for the Lions.

Somerset Academy’s young team secured third place in the Class 1A standings with Kendrick Hodge taking home top honors at 160 pounds.

Four wrestlers in Class 1A won their second state title on Saturday.

Nicholas Yancey (Cardinal Gibbons, 120), Lance Schyck (Lemon Bay, 182), Mikey Tal Shahar (American Heritage-Delray Beach, 195), and Ethan Vergara (Mater Lakes, 285) each won title number two in Kissimmee.
