Lake Gibson rolls past Springstead to earn region duals championships

BY BRANT PARSONS — No. 1 Lake Gibson didn't allow itself to look ahead to some big matchups in the state duals tournament on Friday, easily dispatching Springstead 63-12 to earn the 2A-2 region duals crown.

The defending state champion Braves won 12 of 14 bouts as they looked to set the stage for a showdown Saturday.

"It was a good day from the standpoint of getting some of the younger guys in and getting them experience," Lake Gibson head coach Daniel Walker said. "Win. Survive. Advance. And tomorrow is going to be a much harder day."

LeAndre Campbell started the day with a win at 145 for Lake Gibson before Gianni Maldonado scored the first pinfall win of the day at 152.

Mitchell Colgin (160), Jace Brownlow (170), and Frank Solarzano (182) followed up with wins for Lake Gibson before Pedro Class got Springstead on the board with a win at 195 pounds.

Lake Gibson would win the next seven bouts with bonus point wins.

Brayden Kahelin (220), Leyland Callahan (285), Jeffrey Mesner (106), Elijah Lowe (113), Christian Fretwell (120), Colt Brown (126), and Gaetano Tedesco (132) all won for the Braves.

Josh Gallo would close the match out with a win for the Eagles.

Lake Gibson opens up Saturday with No. 4 Charlotte in the state semifinals with a potential meeting with No. 2 Fleming Island looming in the finals.

"I'm not sure if I'm feeling that gambling feeling tomorrow," Walker said. "We have to do it for our team no matter what."
