Friday matches to watch in district tournament
BY BRANT PARSONS — We have two more days of district wrestling taking place and we’ve gone through the nine tournaments on Friday to pick out some matches to watch for.
That doesn’t mean that they will. We can’t always predict weight changes, injuries and illness, and sometimes the bracket has other plans.
But we think that these would be a treat if they go down
3A-5: at George Jenkins, 4:30 p.m.
126: #16 Justo Medina (Davenport) vs. #18 Jarold Cervantes (Plant City)
These two didn’t meet when they two teams dualed back in January.
3A-7: at Riverview, 9:30 a.m.
113: #8 Brendon Clark (Sumner) vs. #12 Leonardo Perdomo (Bloomingdale)
These two have split their season series with Clark winning the most recent meeting.
3A-8: at Sarasota Riverview, 10 a.m.
106: #10 Luke Ladle (Sarasota) vs. #12 Michael Schlegel (Palmetto)
The two have met twice this season with Ladle winning in sudden victory and in a tiebreaker.
113: #14 Sean Herlihy (Palmetto) vs. #19 Niccolo Pellicano (Venice)
They’ve met twice this season with Pellicano winning the first by fall and Herlihy avenging that loss with a technical fall win.
150: #14 Nevan Nadeau (Palmetto) vs. #16 Christian Medina (Venice)
Nadeau is 2-0 against Medina this season with the first win being a 4-2 decision followed by a major.
3A-14: at West Broward, 10 a.m.
120: #20 Logan Shapiro (Cypress Bay) vs. #21 Lincoln Derby (South Plantation)
They just met in the BCAA finals and it was a thrilling 12-9 decision win for Shapiro.
175: #10 Aryeh Rosenberg (South Plantation) vs. #11 Xander Ortiz (Nova)
Rosenberg is 2-0 with two major decision wins this season.
2A-2: at Chiles, 2:30 p.m.
113: #5 Joe Tucker (Lincoln) vs. #7 Nathan Harvey (Middleburg)
Tucker has won twice against Harvey, a 6-1 win and a major decision.
2A-11: at North Fort Myers, 11:30 a.m.
150: #9 Wyatt Nevling (Charlotte) vs. #11 Logan Miller (Riverdale) vs. #12 Maddox Williams (Port Charlotte) vs. #13 Gabriele Nudi (North Fort Myers)
Nevling has wins over two of these other three and is the favorite, but this will be a bracket to watch how it plays out.
190: #7 West Lucas (North Fort Myers) vs. #8 Clark Daley (Mariner)
Lucas has been coming on strong this season and beat Daley 10-9 in the LCAC final.
235: #1 Seth Tshiams (North Fort Myers) vs. #2 Jaxon Newton (Charlotte)
Two of the best heavyweights in the state and they haven’t met this season.
2A-12: at Lely, 2 p.m.
150: #14 Joseph Wilkinson (Barron Collier) vs. #21 Cooper Garcia (Naples) vs. #22 Jason Perez (South Fort Myers)
Probably the deepest weight class in the tournament.
1A-12: at Bishop Verot, 2 p.m.
106: #6 Benito Barnhart (St. John Neumann) vs. #7 Hudson Sweitzer (Bishop Verot)
When they faced this season it wasn’t as close as the rankings are.
113: #2 Lukah Zherka (Aubrey Rogers) vs. #3 Everett Stephens (First Baptist-Naples) vs. #6 Erik Perez (St. John Neumann)
Zherka has a 2-0 win over Stephens and a 4-2 victory over Perez - while Stephens has a 6-5 win over Perez.
175: #2 Xavier Barnhart (St. John Neumann) vs. #4 Bennett Sweitzer (Bishop Verot)
Barnhart has two decision wins between these two — 7-2 and 10-7.
1A-15: at SLAM Academy
285: #25 Jamarcus Girtman (Miami Edison) vs. MichaelAngelo Alvarez (Reagan) vs. Shantavous White (SLAM Academy)
This might be the most competitive weight class in the district.
