Kabra+: Super 32 early entry preview

BY BRANT PARSONS —

The unofficial start of the high school wrestling season takes place this weekend at Kissimmee Osceola High School with the Super 32 Early Entry tournament. The event will feature returning state placers along with up-and-coming talent that is looking to leave a mark this season.

The tournament officially awards an early-entry chance to register into the national Super 32 tournament to the first four placers in each weight class, but this tournament also provides many wrestlers a chance to see where they stand with just over 50 days until the official start of high school practice. The Super 32 Challenge is a national preseason tournament that takes place this year on October 23 and 24 in Greensboro, NC.

Those who finished in the top 4 at the 2021 FHSAA State Tournament do not need to compete in the early entry tournament, as they have already qualified for the early registration window for Super 32.

Here’s a quick breakdown of each weight based off the early entries and the weight class the wrestlers initially entered.

Note: Weight classes in Kabra Wrestling rankings are updated when officially told by a coach or parent of new division. So some weight class rankings may be a bit off from where they are competing this week, as I don’t try to guess future plans. Because of this, for the high school boys division, I am just listing the ranking in their respective weight class.

As always, picks are for entertainment purposes only.

The favorites: Thomas Gernhart (#3-2A); Gabriel Tellez (#8-3A)

The challengers: Richard Albert (#5-2A); Logan Delos Santos (#7-1A); Fredrick Mitchum (#8-2A); Evan Martinez (#10-3A); Andrew Punzalan (#11-3A); Elijah Lowe (#11-2A); Sam Tolomeo (#13-2A); Josh Hartley (#14-3A); Cole Brown (#14-2A); Derrick Williams (#15-2A); Josiah Ortiz (#16-3A); Luke Williams (#17-3A); Aiden Baker (#20-2A)

The story: There are a ton of ranked wrestlers in this weight class and even more freshman that could take many of the top spots. Freshman wrestlers start to get ranked after this tournament and if past years are any indication, there will be a lot appearing in the Top 20 after this weekend.

Kabra picks: 1. Gernhart; 2. Tellez; 3. Mitchum; 4. Martinez
