Hagerty edges Timber Creek to punch ticket to state duals

BY BRANT PARSONS — Needing just one victory in the final three bouts to secure a spot in the 3A-1 region duals final, No. 18 Hagerty knew the best chance to clinch would come at 220 pounds.

Landon Revis was facing Jayden Smith in a rematch from their district dual final, a match won by Revis 2-1.

This time there would be a little more scoring with Smith coming out strong and taking down Revis twice in the first period. A reversal with 13 seconds left would pull Revis closer.

“If we can win the match, we win the dual,” Hagerty coach Scotty Diaz said of the mindset heading into it. “I figured we could beat him again after doing so last week but their kid fought hard and Landon had to battle back.”

After a single escape point in the second period, Revis rode Smith for the entirety of the third period to force sudden victory, where he would go on to win 5-4.

The win sealed the dual for Hagerty, who would go on to win 36-33. Next up for the Huskies is a return trip to Kissimmee for the region finals in the state duals.

“Tonight, I was probably the most nervous I’ve been at a dual,” Diaz said. “Those are the ones you remember though and they’re the most fun.”

The rematch of Hagerty’s 16-point win last week started with Timber Creek taking a 9-0 lead.

Marlo Clark began the dual with a win by fall at 113 pounds and Keegan Clark followed up with a 13-8 win at 120.

The Huskies would then take the lead with an 18-point run of their own.

Benjamin Wolgamuth (126) started it off with a pin before Logan Acey-Kriegshauser scored three points for Hagerty with a 7-3 win.

After Nikolas Blake earned six points via forfeit, Gavin Nelson defeated returning state qualifier Josue Batista 5-2 to make it 18-9. Batista made his season debut on Wednesday night.

The teams then traded pins with Andrew Wittenberg (152) and Micah Wittenberg (170) scoring wins by fall with Kamdon Harrison (160) scoring six in between.

With a narrow 24-21 lead, Hagerty then worked on putting the dual away.

Connor Gilliam won a 7-5 decision at 182 pounds before Hunter Tate (195) scored a first-period pin, setting the stage for Revis.

After Revis’ win, Timber Creek completed the scoring with Peter Nesheiwat (285) and Mohammad Davtalabsabet (106) earning pins.

“It was a crazy dual and our guys really had to come through and did,” Diaz said. “They made me proud tonight.”
