Big-time upsets highlight first week of action in girls wrestling

BY BRANT PARSONS — The first two tournaments of the girls Florida high school wrestling season saw three returning state champions lose and at least 14 top ten wrestlers go down.

We’ve gone through the results and compiled a list of upsets that stood out to us. Did we miss one? Send us a note to let us know.

#3-235 Rotchiva Clermont (Orlando Freedom) p. #1-190 Cheyenne Cruce (Middleburg)

One of the biggest statements of a big statement day for the Patriots, Clermont pinned the two-time state champion.

#2-125 Jasmine Serrano (Springstead) maj. #1-115 Iyonna Church-Ross (Charlotte)

Knocking off the state champion gave Serrano two tourney wins to start the season.

#3-105 Camdyn Elliott (Gulf Breeze) p. #2-105 Joslyn Johnson (Flagler Palm Coast)

These two just keep having great matches.

#14-155 Chrystal Desir (Forest Hill) maj. #2-155 Alena Rik (Mater Lakes) 12-4

#14-155 Chrystal Desir (Forest Hill) maj. #6-155 Valentina Mora (Miami Beach) 12-3

Though the Seahorse Open isn't a FHSAA event, these were some signifiant wins for the sophomore.

#8-155 Riley Lancaster (Admiral Farragut) dec. #3-170 Isabella McFarlane (King) 7-3

The junior made her mark at 170 with this big semifinal win.

#4-170 Alexa Calidonio (Flagler Palm Coast) dec. #3-155 Mariah Earl (Hernando) 9-3

Not sure this counts as an "upset" but 4 is lower than 3 and this was in the finals at the Rotary.

#17-100 Lily Bradshaw (Middleburg) p. #11-100 Miabella Lopez (Orlando Freedom)

#17-100 Lily Bradshaw (Middleburg) maj. #4-100 Mia Parker (Sunlake) 16-2

The Middleburg junior scored two top wins to finish in third place in a loaded weight class at the Flagler Rotary.

#9-100 Madison Carroll (Gulf Breeze) p. #4-100 Mia Parker (Sunlake)

Carroll broke open a tight match with a third period takedown that led to the fall.

#23-130 Ceajah Brown (Orlando Freedom) maj., p. #7 Kelsey Marschka (Chiles)

Brown made her Freedom debut with a third-place finish and two wins over Marschka.

#13-115 Cameron Lord (Sunlake) dec., maj., #8-120 Sarah Walsh (Middleburg) 8-4, 18-5

Lord defeted the top 10 wrestler Walsh twice at Flagler.

#10-100 Emerson Webber (Hernando) dec. #9-100 Madison Carroll (Gulf Breeze) 5-3

A reversal in the second gave Webber the lead for good in the final

#16-125 Bella Guerrier-Lajoir (Columbia) p. #8-125 Isabel Alvarez (Viera)

#16-125 Bella Guerrier-Lajoir (Columbia) p. #12-120 Donavanne Hofmann (Ponte Vedra)

Guerrier-Lajoir had two statment wins in the Flagler Rotary.

UNR Gracie Austin (Charlotte) p. #15-120 Maelyn Argerenon (Tenoroc)

Austin made a name for herself with two ranked wins on her way to winning the Princess Punchout title.
