Featured Dual: Lake Nona edges St. Cloud

BY BRANT PARSONS — With Lake Nona trailing St. Cloud by four points with just three matches to go, the Lions leaned on two brand-new wrestlers.

Xoel Torres won his match by pin to give Lake Nona the lead and then Lance Johnson scored a win by fall at 220 pounds in his first-ever match to clinch the dual for the Lions.

“Both those guys are new wrestlers and members of the football team,” Lake Nona coach Eric Scrivens said.

Lake Nona (1-0) would earn a 41-39 win over St. Cloud (0-1).

"We showed we have tons of potential," Lake Nona coach Eric Scrivens said.

Also scoring wins for the Lions were Gabriela Martins (106), Clark Zerba (113), Christian Reinhardt (126), Samuel Sangmeister (138), and Marek Borrelli (152).

“We are still very much figuring out a lot of the pieces,” Scrivens said. “We have a mix of experience, and then potential.”

Huron’s 12-5 win over Lake Nona’s Gabriel Medina was the most exciting match on the night.

"St. Cloud gave us one helluva fight," Scrivens said. “They continue to be a really tough group.”

The night also saw two girls bouts with each team having a winner.

Milana Borrelli won at 120 pounds for Lions while Amy Bartol was victorious at 135 pounds.
