Featured Dual: Middleburg edges Yulee
BY BRANT PARSONS — Middleburg used a three-match run of pins at the end to beat #9-1A Yulee 42-36 while a freshman provided a mid-dual spark that helped propel the Broncos.
Skyla Fisher (106), Bryan Davis Jr (113), and Grady Woodard (120) each won by fall to lead the Broncos to the win.
“This was a great win for us against a very good Yulee team,” Middleburg coach Coll Robertson said. “We still have a lot of work to do as a group, but a win like this is a sign that we’re heading in the right direction.”
Middleburg jumped out to a 21-0 lead with Ajax Srgo (126), Wyatt Leduc (132), and Logan Moore (145) scoring six point wins.
In the middle of that run, Joseph Forte beat eighth-ranked Austin Adamson 4-1 at 138 pounds.
Yulee then won six of the next seven bouts by pin, outscoring the Broncos 36-3 in the stretch.
Samuel Sahrphillips (152), Dylan Johns (160), Michael McNair (170), Phoenix Barbour-Yerka (182), Alex Smith (220), and Braylen Ricks (285) all picked up wins for Hornets.
The most exciting match of the night went in favor of Middleburg at 195 pounds.
Freshman Porter Loveland topped ninth-ranked Christopher Aud 9-4 in a match that proved to be critical in the final outcome.
“Porter showed a lot of guts in that match,” Robertson said. “He made great mid-match adjustments, listened well, and got a huge win that I feel was the deciding factor in the dual. I’m excited to see how much he improves as the season rolls on.”
