BY BRANT PARSONS — Coral Reef got their season off to a quick start, winning two duals at Coral Gables on Tuesday night.

The Barracudas topped host Coral Gables 49-30 and outscored Hialeah Gardens 52-27.

“It feels very satisfying to start off 2-0 against two tough opponents in Hialeah Gardens and Coral Gables,” Coral Reef head coach Miguel Dominguez said.

Noah Mijares (113), Alejandro Armas (132), Elijah Almonte (138), Daniel Agreda (190), and Gregory Gonzalez (215) all went 2-0 on the night for the Barracudas. Rashied Paul (120) was also unbeaten, winning one match by pin and the other by forfeit.

“The team showed a great deal of confidence and composure,” Dominguez said. “I think it will be a great confidence boost for the team overall going into this weekend’s tough H-Town tournament.”

One wrestler who stood out for Coral Reef was Brandon Calderon, who went 1-1 while competing for the first time.

“Brandon performed very well for it being his first-ever high school wrestling event,” Dominguez said. “His effort was awesome.”

Sophomore Mijares had a good night for Coral Reef too, wrestling up at 113 after being the 106-pounder last year.

“The level of technique he has gained in just one season and one off season now coming into his sophomore year is quite impressive,” Dominguez said.

Kabra Wrestling has reached out to both Coral Gables and Hialeah Gardens for their dual results.
