District Duals wrap: Lemon Bay wins 1A-11 in first district duals competition of season

BY BRANT PARSONS — No. 3 Lemon Bay blanked Bayshore 73-0 in the 1A-11 district duals competition on Thursday.

The two teams were the only ones who competed from the district.

The dual featured three bouts between wrestlers ranked in the latest Kabra Wrestling rankings.

At 113 pounds, No. 5 Jack Oliver pinned No. 11 Dominick Myers in the first period.

The most exciting match of the night may have been the 152-pound bout between Bayshore’s ninth-ranked Pablo Santamaria and 14th-ranked Ashton Tucker from Lemon Bay.

Santamaria scored the match’s first takedown and led the match 4-3 in the third period when Tucker took down the Bayshore senior and won the match with a pin in the final minute to secure the upset.

And at 220 pounds, No. 8 Ben Arnett pulled away in the third period with two takedowns to secure a 6-3 win over No. 17 Terrion Hillard.

“Wrestling a ranked kid is what you want if you want to know how good you are,” Lemon Bay coach Mike Schyck said. “I’m proud of our guys for competing hard tonight. What I saw out of those three guys is that they did not want to lose and wrestled in every position.”

No. 5 Logan Kelly (120), Aidan Caviston (126), No. 9 Brycen Warren (132), No. 4 Justin Brady (138), No. 12 Conner Murphy (145), No. 8 Nick Sheets (160), No. 1 Keon Hoffman (170), No. 2 Chase Alden (182), No. 5 Marcus Lopez (195), and Mike Ward (285) all picked up wins for the Manta Rays.

Both teams advance to the region quarterfinals on January 12 at the District 1A-12 winner, which is expected to be No. 4 First Baptist Naples.

“It is an expectation with our team to compete for a state championship both individually and in the duals,” Schyck said. “This was a great stepping stone moving into the next month.”
