KISSIMMEE — Tampa Jesuit kept finding ways to win and the Tigers took home their second team IBT title at the FHSAA State Wrestling Tournament at Silver Spurs Arena.

The Tigers entered the season with high hopes with some veteran upperclassmen and a talented freshman class coming in and on Saturday night, it all culminated in a Class 2A championship.

“Conditioning is obviously a huge part of it but we put our kids in situations in the room,” Tampa Jesuit assistant coach David Mason said. “We had a ton of pins and we had a ton of one-point wins that we won on ride-outs or because we got out on bottom and that’s a testament to our kids.”

Jesuit finished with three champions, Malachi Ortiz (113), Draven McCall (150), and Brandon Cody (165). Also reaching the finals were Roman Lermer (120) and Kawayran Vazquez (157). Only Lermer and Cody are seniors.

The Tigers finished with 201 points and won the team tile by over 50 points.

“We work really, really hard and we believe in what we do and with time and with effort, the kids so as well,” Mason said.

Lake Gibson (146.5) finished as runners-up with Winter Springs (103.5), Charlotte (87), and Heritage (77) rounding out the top five.
