Jensen Beach tops Mater Lakes to advance in Class 1A; Clay, Lemon Bay and Palm Bay win

BY BRANT PARSONS — One of the most anticipated duals of the first day at the FHSAA state duals did not disappoint with No. 3 Jensen Beach continuing its historic run to a region title with a 36-27 win over No. 2 Mater Lakes.

After beating two top 5 teams in the Kabra Wrestling Dual Rankings last Thursday in the region quarterfinals and semifinals, the Falcons used a 1-2-3 punch at the end of Friday’s dual to knock off a third Top 5 team in the 1A-4 region final.

"They are a special group of individuals, they fight for each other and they're battle tested," Jensen Beach coach Tom McMath said.

With three matches remaining in the back-and-forth dual and Mater Lakes clinging to a 27-26 lead, Ryan Mooney, Johnny Dobbs, and Ryan Duguay put the finishing touches on the win with 10 points combined to seal the win.

Second-ranked Mooney put Jensen Beach on top to stay with a 13-1 major decision over No. 11 Malikai Badillo at 120 pounds before Dobbs made his season debut with a 9-2 win over No. 4 Emmanuel Celestin.

The Falcons took a six-point lead into the final match before No. 2 Duguay outlasted No. 4 Dylan Garcia in sudden victory with a 2-0 win at 132 pounds.

"Our horses showed up at the end and that's what won it in the end," McMath said.

Jensen Beach will face No. 8 Palm Bay in the Class 1A semifinals on Saturday morning.

Palm Bay won nine of 14 matches against Hernando to win their region final 48-19. It’s the second consecutive region title for the Pirates.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Clay reversed a 12-6 deficit with 10 consecutive wins to knock off No. 10 Wakulla 57-18.

The Blue Devils rally was started by Luca Fianna at 160 pounds when he pinned Aiden Fetterhoff.

Clay will face No. 6 Lemon Bay on Saturday morning after the Manta Rays defeated Hudson 73-6 in their region final.

Lemon Bay won 13 of the 14 matches and worked on getting into a rhythm with a Saturday test looming.

"Tomorrow is going to be a lot harder," Lemon Bay coach Mike Schyck said. "It's going to be a good test for us; we’ve earmarked this as where we should be and to put ourselves in a position to win a state title. We’ll need to step up tomorrow to make that happen.”
