Christian Fretwell named Reader’s Choice Wrestler of the Week

BY BRANT PARSONS — For Lake Gibson’s Christian Fretwell, being constant in his work is what matters the most.

At the NHSCA National Duals, Fretwell showcased what his work ethic has developed as he was dominant, going 8-0 and not giving up a single takedown the whole tournament. That performance earned him this week’s Reader’s Choice Wrestler of the Week honors.

“Success isn’t always about greatness,” Fretwell said. “It’s about consistency and the hard work that I have been putting into my training is what is leading me to be successful on the mat along with the support of my coaches Danny Walker and Conor Beebe.”

Fretwell has been performing well all summer, and followed up his Wrestler of the Week performance with another strong showing at the Spartan Duals.

“He’s going in a good direction,” Lake Gibson head coach Walker said. “He had an amazing weekend at the NHSCA competing against the best in the country.”

Fretwell is entering his senior season and is looking to make a big impact in Florida and the country. He’s a two-time Florida state champion and working through the bitter taste of a second place finish this past season.

“I needed that loss, it was probably the best thing to happen to me to be honest,” Fretwell said of the state final defeat. “My mentality and approach to wrestling has completely changed in a more productive manner.”

And that new approach continues to show up in success on the mat.

“Sometimes a loss is what we need,” Walker said. “He’s going to make sure he doesn’t have that feeling again.”
