South Dade dominates for region crown in state title chase
KISSIMMEE — South Dade moved another step closer to a sixth state duals title with a convincing 72-3 victory of South Plantation in the Class 3A-4 region final.
The Buccaneers won 13 of the 14 matches and scored the maximum 6 points at 12 of them.
“We’re just trying to put as many points on the board as we can,” South Dade senior Chris Sanchez said. “We just find different ways to make it fun.”
South Dade scored the first 27 points in the match.
First-year wrestler Daguy Massillon won in the ultimate tie-breaker in the first bout to get things started at 285.
Bryan Morales (106), Guillermo Jaramillo (113), Luis Acevedo (120), and Nathaniel Williams (126) followed that with four consecutive pins.
South Planation earned its one win on the night when Joshua Whitter scored a 3-2 decision win at 132 pounds.
After that, South Dade won the rest of the night with EJ Solis (138), Jaiden Oliver (144), Gavin Balmeceda (165), Kevin Olavarria (175), Sanchez (190), and Sawyer Bartelt (215) all winning by pin.
Joshua Aviles (dec. at 150) and Jonathan Moreno (forfeit at 157) completed the scoring.
“I feel like we’re better than last year,” Sanchez said. “With nine returning kids, all of them have gotten better from last year.”
South Dade will face Wellington in the semifinals.
The semifinals take place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Kissimmee Osceola High School. Tickets can be purchased here.
