Timber Creek makes history with first region duals title

KISSIMMEE — Timber Creek had the feeling back in the summer that this year’s Wolves team could do something that no other public school in Orange County had done - win a region duals title.

On Friday, that idea came true as #6 Timber Creek handled #13 Buchholz 48-21 for the Class 3A-1 region duals title at the FHSAA State Duals Tournament at Kissimmee Osceola High School.

"It's been a goal of ours since the summer, I said 'hey guys' we can do this," Timber Creek coach Jon Cone said. "We can go to the state duals, we can possibly win the region - looking at what we had and everything there it became a team goal."

That goal came true with Timber Creek winning key duals they needed, and losing in special ways in other, avoiding being pinned in four of the five Buchholz wins.

“We needed everyone to wrestle hard and we needed to stay off our back,” Cone said. “We asked them to wrestle well and their performance was phenomenal.”

Buchholz started the dual with their only pin, a win by Derryl Godbolt at 285 and Gabriel Ramos earning a win at 106 to give the Bobcats a 9-0 lead.

Timber Creek roared back with Tiago Neves (pin at 113), Marlo Clark (pin at 120), and Keegan Clark (dec. at 126) to take the lead back.

The two teams the went back-and-forth for the next six matches.

Jedidiah Brown (132), Laine Slayton (144), and Cavarius Liddie (157) scored 12 points in their three wins while Josue Batista (138), Ozy Aquino (150), and Andrew Wittenberg (165) tallied 18 in theirs.

The Wolves kept the winning the rest of the way with Angel Pluguez (175), Danny Pacheco (190), and Rocco Jonigan (215) finishing off the win.

The semifinals take place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Kissimmee Osceola High School. Tickets can be purchased here.
