G1A-14 Preview: Wellington and Douglas in two-team race for district supremacy

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Wellington scored 228, Douglas 135, and the next closest team had 48.

How did Kabra do?: This may have been the one we got the most correct. We said it was a two-team race but that Wellington was still the team to beat.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Lana Loucks (Wellington), Sofia Toledo (Wellington), Ariana Blanc (Douglas)

The favorite: Wellington. They graduated quite a bit of leadership and wrestlers, but still the team to beat.

Team to watch: Douglas. This year it should be really close with a bigger Douglas team on the chase.

District IBT: Unknown at press time

Wellington Wolverines (NR/#8)

Coach: Travis Gray (19th season)

Assistant coaches: Adam Ferrara, Jake Ferrara, Ryan Goodman, Mike Shaughnessy, Ken Kosza, Aurora Guadiana, Engelbert Pellecer, RJ Caullett

23-24 dual record: 5-0

Recent district results: 2024:1; 2023:1; 2022:1

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Vivianna Caullett, 24-4, 7th, RC, DC; Aurora Guadiana, 19-3, SQ, RC, DC; Azaria Williams, 8-7, RQ, D2; Isabella Di Palermo, So., 12-4, RQ, DC; Jasmine Bell, So., 5-15, RQ, D2

Notable returning wrestlers: Lana Loucks, Jr., 30-10, SQ, R3, DC; Alysaa Garcia, So., 25-14, SQ, R2, DC; Sofia Toledo, Sr., 15-8, RQ-BR, D2; Cristal Alcocer, Sr., 15-8, RQ, DC; Emma Kosza, So., 13-10, RQ, D2; Kassarah Cadavid, Jr., 17-8, RQ, DC; Jezmeri Pesante, Jr., 6-14, RQ, D4.

What they are saying: “We lost our two big seniors in Vivianna and Aurora so this is going to be an interesting transition year for us. We have 18-19 girls now and we just have to figure out where to fit them in and fill up the lineup.”

On getting competition: “We’re trying to get them into tough tournaments early, just like we do with the boys, but that’s been a little bit more of a challenge. The majority of teams in our area don’t have many so we’re going to go to Miami, Fort Myers, and Orlando and give them that experience.”

Outlook: The Wolverines might not be strong at the top this season but they’ll have a full room of girls with experience and they’ll work on getting better for when the stakes go up at the end of the year.

Douglas Eagles (NR/#19)

Coach: Kenny Gendason (9th at Douglas, 14th overall)

Assistant coaches: Dan Sanchez, Rob Granda

Recent district results: 2024:2; 2023:2; 2022:6-1A15

Last state champion: Gabriela Caro, 2024 (130)

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Gabriela Caro, 18-0, SC, RC, DC; Grace Mackenzie, 14-4, RQ, D3.

Notable returning wrestlers: Ariana Blanc, Jr., 15-8, RQ-BR, D3; Haasini Vattikuti, Jr., 14-6, RQ-BR, D2; Veronika Kushnir, So., 7-5, RQ, D2; Mickayla Sugrano, Jr., 14-4, RQ, D3; Addison McMahon, So., 7-6, RQ, D4; Liz De Azevedo, Sr., RQ, D3; Aniyah Smith, So., 8-10, D5; Valeria Bonilla, Sr., 2-7, RQ, D3.

What they are saying: “They just need to keep believing more. They’ve come a long, long way. Ariana was only a first-year wrestler last year and she lost by a couple points to go to state. I think it’s just that they have to believe in themselves and they’ve done everything in the offseason we could have asked them to do.”

On Caro’s legacy: “She definitely gave the program identity. When she came out as a 10th grader, she was the only girl on the team and then when she started succeeding all of a sudden girls came out of the woodwork to join wrestling. Gabby was the idol, they all looked up to her.”

Outlook: Multiple-time state champion Caro is gone but there are still some aspirations and will look to defend their title from the inaugural BCAA championship. Blanc and Vattikuti came within one match of Kissimmee a year ago.

Suncoast Chargers

Coach: Dan Tria (8th year)

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Maia Ortega, 29-10, SQ, R4, DC.

New wrestler: Kamor Smith-Williams, So.

What they are saying: “We return a lot of talent but the loss of Ortega is massive. Between her leadership and example, she set the tone for what our program is all about. These girls have a massive legacy to live up to but they have the heart and the hunger to build upon the foundation Maia set down.”

On the coaching staff: “I’m very luck because I have five people who are very qualified to help me out and are very good at the individual things I’ve given them to do and I couldn’t be prouder to have them on my staff.”

On Cali Anderson: “She’s made pretty big strides this year, she looks like a different wrestler this year. She comes to practice every day and works hard, if not harder, than the boys.”
