G1A-13 Preview: Smallest girls district is tough to predict

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: In one of the closest district races in the state, Viera topped Vero Beach by 8 points with six teams scoring over 100 points.

How did Kabra do?: We mentioned the champs in our pick, but our pick finished fourth.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Kha'liyah Delva (Fort Pierce Central), Neveah Robinson (Okeechobee), Brooke VanEtten (Jensen Beach), MacKenzie Allcroft (Fort Pierce Central), Quisiera Wilson (Lincoln Park)

The favorite: Vero Beach. Ken Colao moved over to full-time girls coach because he knew they had something special and he wanted to build it.

Team to watch: Lincoln Park. A new coach and same deep team. They could be the best team in this, the smallest girls district in Florida.

District IBT: Wednesday, February 12 at Fort Pierce Central, 5 p.m.

Vero Beach Indians

Coach: Ken Colao (7th at school, 42nd overall)

Assistant coach: Rich Fatigate

Recent district results: 2024:2; 2023:15; 2022:3

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): None

Notable returning wrestlers: Brenda Barthelemy, Sr., 21-11, RQ, DC; Mya Wallace, Sr., 19-14, RQ, D4; Jayla Benjamin, Jr., 24-6, RQ, DC; Kaydence Ahlers, So., 12-16, RQ, D4; Shyonte Stinson, Sr., 10-12, RQ, D2; Kelis Tawzer, Sr., 18-18, RQ, D3.

What they are saying: “This young group is fun to work with. They are picking up the technique quickly. Ten of the seventeen wrestlers are first year. The one thing i can say is these girls are aggressive and want to be in the room.”

On leadership in room: “Their role is to be the big sister and helping out when a new wrestler needs help. They’ve certainly taking on the big sister role model role.”

On taking on just the girls program: “I wanted to build up the numbers in the program. I think we finished with nine last season. I thought we needed some help so I decided to let my assistant take over the boys program so I could focus on this. Now we are at around 20 girls in the room.”

Outlook: Colao moves over from the boys side to lead the girls and he’s got a good mix of experience and youth in the room.
