Region Finals

NOTE: Team rankings are Kabra Wrestling’s team dual rankings for Class 3A.

#13 DeLand vs.

#19 Hagerty

3A-1 Region Final

All-Time region finals record | How they got here

Deland: 0-0, First appearance in the region finals

The District 2 champions beat Creekside 45-25 and then Buchholz 47-25.

Hagerty: 0-3, L to Flagler Palm Coast 36-30 in 2022

After winning 3A-3 district title, Hagerty topped Apopka 69-11 and beat 3A-3 runner-up Timber Creek 36-33.

Ranked wrestlers

This is the fourth time in five years that Hagerty is making the trip to Kissimmee for the region final while DeLand is making its first trip to Kissimmee for the state duals tournament. The strengths of each team are located apart so this dual should come down to whose starts get the most bonus points and who wins the toss-up matches.

Hagerty keeps getting closer to earning the region final win and they certainly could get it here, but I’ll pick DeLand to have a little bit more.

DeLand: 120: #10 Phoenix Krauth (23-7); 138: #16 Kellen Chapman (16-8); 145: #17 Joshua Folsom (23-8); 152: #12 Mathias Franz (32-7); 160: #18 Zane Canada (22-7); 182: #10 Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro (29-9); 285: #7 MJ Smokes (28-4).

Hagerty: 126: #18 Benjamin Wolgamuth (25-13); 132: #3 Nikolas Blake (33-4); 160: #4 Kamdon Harrison (29-8); 170: #16 Connor Gilliam (17-4); 195: #9 Hunter Tate (18-4).

#7 Cypress Bay vs.

#1 South Dade

3A-4 Region Final

All-Time region finals record | How they got here

Cypress Bay: 0-5, Lost to South Dade in all previous five years of the state duals tournament

The District 14 champions won a rematch of their district final with a 70-12 throttling of Western.

South Dade: 5-0, Have won four state duals championships

The Buccaneers beat No. 10 Columbus 75-0 and then beat No. 2 Southwest Miami 58-16.

Ranked wrestlers

South Dade has been thinking about this tournament since the Bucs were eliminated in the state semifinals last year by eventual state champion Palmetto Ridge. Cypress Bay has the unlucky reality of being in South Florida and always meeting South Dade at this point in the tournament.

This might be the best team that Cypress Bay has brought to the state duals, unfortunately for the Lightning, this might be the best team that South Dade has brought also. South Dade wins this one.

Cypress Bay: 106: #1 Andrew Punzalan (47-2); 120: #3 Jordan Escarra (41-1); 126: #9 Gabriel Herrero (43-4); 138: #20 Tyler Bill; 182: #2 Zach Weidler (34-1); 195: #6 Gyani Mosi (33-7); 285: #4 Gozie Mosi (32-3).

South Dade: 106: #8 Bryan Morales (37-9); 113: #8 Guillermo Jarmillo (29-8); 120: #2 Luis Acevedo (33-3); 126: #3 Joshua Aviles (18-1); 126: #15 Nathaniel Williams (32-7); 132: #6 Tyree Graham (20-6); 132: #14 Luis Arboleda (23-5); 138: #1 EJ Solis (25-1); 145: #3 Misha Arbos (33-6); 152: #2 Gavin Balmeceda (39-3); 160: #3 Cordell White (7-0); 170: #2 Lawrence Rosario (37-7); 182: #3 Christopher Sanchez (31-8); 195: #1 Ansel Cervantes (22-0); 220: #1 Sawyer Bartelt (25-0); 285: #11 Marcelo Rosario (27-8).

#3 Kissimmee Osceola vs.

#11 Palmetto Ridge

3A-2 Region Final

All-Time region finals record | How they got here

Kissimmee Osceola: 1-4, Reached the state final in 2020

The District 5 champions earned a sixth region championship berth with wins over Strawberry Crest and Steinbrenner.

Palmetto Ridge: 3-1, The defending state champions won the region final between these two teams 54-20 last year

After defeating Newsome 63-13, the District 8 champions rallied to beat Riverdale 39-31 to advance to region final.

Ranked wrestlers

Palmetto Ridge won the state duals title last year but is a much younger team after graduating a lot of its core from last year. The Bears still have some stars and that will counteract Osceola’s big guns. Whichever team has the depth and wins the toss-up matches will have the edge here.

This could be the best 3A region dual final, but I’ll go with the experience of Kissimmee Osceola in a close one.

Kissimmee Osceola: 120: #5 Evan Martinez (23-10); 126: #19 Isfandier Sharipov (17-12); 145: #1 Anderson Heap (37-2); 152: #1 Cooper Haase (35-1); 160: #1 Gunner Holland (31-3); 182: #14 Bryan Gari (17-9); 195: #7 Jomar Sanchez (21-6); 220: #7 Elijah Vansickle (14-6).

Palmetto Ridge: 106: #19 William McGowan (9-7); 113: #1 Tyler Washburn (16-4); 126: #7 Bernardo Barnhart; 138: #6 Jean Valoria; 152: #4 Demetri Zertopoulis (8-5); 170: #1 Roman Garcia (15-3); 220: #16 Jordan Peralez; 220: #19 Khari Bendolph; 285: #3 Austin Foye (15-3).

#5 Fort Pierce Central

vs. #12 Wellington

3A-3 Region Final

All-Time region finals record | How they got here

Fort Pierce Central: 2-1, Have split both region final contests against Wellington

The District 10 champions won a tough battle with Harmony 46-36 and then defeated Orlando Freedom to reach here.

Wellington: 3-1, The Wolverines defeated the Cobras 37-25 en route to the state final last year

After placing second in District 12, Wellington topped Jupiter 57-28 and then got revenge for the district loss with a 42-18 victory over No. 15 Olympic Heights.

Ranked wrestlers

Fort Pierce Central has one of the deepest teams coming to Kissimmee in 3A and they’ll look to use that to get past a Wellington team that learned a lot about itself last year in the same competition.

Wellington came of age here in Kissimmee last year in this tournament and there’s no doubt they have been building off of that, but they’re a little bit younger and lacking the deeper firepower of the Cobras. I’ll pick Fort Pierce Central to win this one.

Fort Pierce Central:106: #18 Myles Henkel (22-11); 113: #11 Connor Harris (31-9); 120: #4 Daniel Echeverria (32-5); 132: #20 Ashton Hager (25-10); 152: #5 JT Apicella (37-6); 160: #13 Brian Melara (18-5); 182: #15 Aiden Madden (27-6); 220: #6 Hernan Ortiz (30-4); 285: #12 Alaq Dowd (26-10).

Wellington:106: #5 Cameron Gibson (20-4); 120: #12 Sam Marvel; 126: #12 James Kosza (27-12); 138: #9 Mario Trigazis; 160: #7 Mac Andrews (26-3); 195: #18 Dwayne Shaw (21-11).
