1A-9 Preview: Anclote and Hudson look to battle for top spot for third straight year

BY BRANT PARSONS — Everything came together last season for Anclote as the Sharks powered to a district title win.

This year’s race promises to be close again and one of their closest competitors is hoping they can be ready to fully battle.

The injuries piled up on Hudson last year heading into the postseason and the Cobras know if they can come in as a full team, they can compete.

"We just need to keep doing what we've been doing," Hudson coach Matthew Forbes said. "And we need to stay healthy."

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Anclote had 11 region qualifiers and edged Hudson by 21 points.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Gavin Nolan (CCC), Gavyn Uribes (Hudson), Dominic Fouché (CCC), Luke Francis (CCC)

The favorite: Anclote. I think this is one of the more open district races, but we’ll give the nod to the defending champion Sharks.

Team to watch: CCC. The Marauders have a two-time state champion and some new faces in the room to improve their depth.

District duals: Jan. 4 at Tarpon Springs

District IBT: Feb. 16 at Clearwater Central Catholic

Kabra Says: Both Anclote and Hudson lost some key wrestlers to graduation so the difference in this year’s team race could come down to who can fill those open spots the best. We’ll go with Hudson having that edge.

What they are saying: “The program is growing and gaining much more interest each year. It has a great foundation that was built before I came here and continues to evolve each year.”

On this team: "I have one (state qualifier) returning and I have a couple of really good seniors that were injured at the end of last year that had a shot. We got a good transfer that came in who was ranked in 3A and I think just the culture that has been built, then built upon and I have a lot of really good second year wrestlers that show a lot of potential."

On how close the team is: "One thing I noticed when I got here was very close knit this group was and they always welcome people in. We always tried to stick together, do things together, they eat lunch together, they have a really close knit thing and even when the freshmen come in, they're always willing to help work with one another and pass on fundamentals and the things that we teach and try to work with everybody coming in and showing them how we do things."

Outlook: If the team can enter postseason healthy, they could be the team to beat again in this district after coming up just short a season ago.

What they are saying: “They are hard workers and good listeners. They made a lot of growth last year and expect more this year.”

On building the sport: "I want them to fall in love with the sport, because it's just a very hard sport. A lot of people, the first couple of days or maybe first couple of weeks, they realize how hard it is. They start thinking that this isn't for me. So we want them to experience some success right away, but not lie to them and let them know this is going to be hard. But let them know that there will be success. And if you stick through it, you're going to fall in love with the sport, you're really going to be happy that you did because it is a beautiful sport."

On taking over as HC: "This is all kind of kind of new to me, but I saw that you were reaching out, I didn't want to not do something I was supposed to do as far as kind of promoting the program and getting connected. There's a lot of a lot of inexperience so there's not a lot to talk about yet. We don't know for sure who we're gonna have. We haven't had a real official practice yet. But down the road after a couple more years, we'll have some kids make it to state and make some noise."

Outlook: The program is still a work in progress with a youth movement slowly picking up with middle school wrestlers. Salyers takes over with extensive wrestling experience, competing in high school and college in Ohio and assisting at a couple different programs.
